How to answer questions spontaneously during an interview process?

Category :Interview Tips

Impromptu speaking or speaking spontaneously is one of the biggest challenges in communication especially when it comes to interviews. Many times interviewers tend to ask you questions you’ve never heard before. At such a point spontaneity comes into play. If you master the art of spontaneous speaking you’ll be able to deliver answers confidently and without any hesitation whatsoever.

You may have the best resume out of the lot but if you’re not able to answer the recruiter’s questions spontaneously, it is likely that you won’t get the job. Here are a few tips to answer the hiring manager’s questions spontaneously during an interview process –

Give the question back to the recruiter in your own words and in such a manner that it lets them know that you have understood their question. For example – If you are interviewing for an architectural firm and you’re asked a question like “What type of rebar should be used in the walls so that they withstand an earthquake of magnitude 6?” you should start your answer in the following manner – “Your question speaks to me one of the most critical components of our work…” So if the beginning of your answer has this type of restatement of the question, it will give the recruiter a feeling of being heard. It also gives you more time to come up with an answer.

Our second tip to you would be that t is always good to look for features or benefits in a question. In other words, answer the question in such a way that underscores the emotional need behind the question. Take advantage of the opportunity to answer the question by mentioning the feature-value selling techniques that answer the question with facts and data. To become perfect at this art try answering questions in this manner, all day long. For example – If someone asks you a question, try answering it in such a manner that it covers up the emotional need of the question and also delivers the feature-benefits associated with it. In other words use your presence of mind while answering the questions.

Practice before the mirror! Yes, it might sound a bit strange but preparing your own question-answers and practicing them before the mirror give you the confidence that you so require.

Observe people around you and take a note of their gestures and speaking style. You can also watch videos online that guide you to perfect the art of answering questions spontaneously during an interview process.

You can also take up a course or class that teaches you to answer questions asked in an interview, quickly and confidently.

The last but one of the most important tips is that you need to stay updated on current events and happenings. If you know what is going on in your industry, you’ll be confident during the interview process and be able to address the questions with utmost confidence. On the other hands, if you have no idea about facts and figures, you’ll not be able to answer the question in a spontaneous manner.
