Secure Every Identity, from AI to Human

Identity is the key to unlocking the potential of AI. Okta secures AI by building the trusted, neutral infrastructure that enables organizations to safely embrace this new era. This work requires a relentless drive to solve complex challenges with real-world stakes. We are looking for builders and owners who operate with speed and urgency and execute with excellence.

This is an opportunity to do career-defining work. We're all in on this mission. If you are too, let's talk.

Job Description:

Okta Workflows is the secure, no-code automation platform that empowers organizations to build identity-centric workflows across cloud applications — all without writing code. Our intuitive drag-and-drop interface allows enterprises to automate complex business processes at scale, enhancing productivity, enforcing security, and simplifying IT operations.
Customers like Netflix, MGM, and NTT rely on Workflows to automate high-impact identity scenarios with speed and confidence.

As we continue to scale, we’re investing in extensibility, developer experience, and performance. Join us to help shape the future of cloud automation and low-code development.

Position Description

We’re hiring a Principal Engineer (full stack) to join the Flow Builder team within Okta Workflows. This team owns the core flow builder user experience and associated backend services that enables both internal teams and customers to build powerful workflows and automation experiences with ease.

You will define the technical roadmap, architect elegant solutions to our most complex engineering challenges, and drive an engineering culture that prioritizes hyper-scalability, rigorous standards, and rapid iterative delivery. As a technical leader at Okta, you will have the autonomy to investigate bleeding-edge technologies, establish enterprise-wide best practices, and architect next-generation enterprise software. Partnering closely with product leadership, UX designers, and technical architects, you will refine strategic requirements to deliver an unparalleled customer experience.

Role Details:

  • Drive Architectural Excellence: Architect, design, build and spearhead the development of highly scalable software systems. Set the gold standard for software engineering architecture, patterns, and processes across multiple teams.

  • Strategic Technical Leadership: Partner directly with Product Management, Engineering Directors, and Principal Architects to define the technical vision, scope complex cross-functional initiatives, and map out long-term execution strategies.

  • End-to-End Ownership: Take ultimate responsibility for the lifecycle of mission-critical code—from high-level system design and implementation to automated testing strategies, global delivery, and observability.

  • Tackle Systemic Complexity: Lead the design and implementation of entirely new product lines while proactively identifying, strategizing, and working down deep architectural technical debt.

  • Champion Engineering Culture: Lead architecture reviews, code reviews, and retrospectives. Establish the frameworks for continuous CI/CD improvements and operational excellence.

  • Cross-Functional Influence: Act as a central technical pivot point, collaborating seamlessly with QA, Technical Support, Documentation, and UX to ensure cohesive product delivery.

  • Force Multiplier: Mentor senior, staff, and mid-level engineers. Cultivate a culture of continuous learning, knowledge-sharing, and technical ambition across the engineering organization.

Experience:

  • Technical Track Record: 13+ years spent architecting, delivering, and operating enterprise grade large-scale distributed systems engineered for global performance.
  • Modern Web Ecosystems: Deep technical fluency across JavaScript and TypeScript, with proven success building state-heavy React frontends alongside highly concurrent Node.js and Express backend environments.
  • Cloud-Native Mastery: Extensive experience designing and running highly available, fault-tolerant infrastructure across using Kubernetes, Docker on AWS, GCP platforms.
  • API & Service Architecture: Advanced expertise designing, versioning, and securing enterprise APIs across RESTful, GraphQL, and gRPC protocols in microservices and event-driven patterns.
  • Quality & Automation Frameworks: Authoritative leadership in modern testing methodologies, including TDD and BDD strategies using modern test automation tools like Playwright etc., that ensure robust continuous deployment.

Nice to Haves:

  • Deep expertise in data modeling, query optimization, and scaling relational databases (PostgreSQL).
  • Advanced proficiency in modern React, State management, Javascript, TypeScript and driving its adoption/standards across large codebases.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with containerization, orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code (Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform).

Education and Training:

  • Bachelors in Computer Science, or relevant industry experience
